This is a really good system, a joint venture between Brighton and Hove Council and Brighton & Hove Bus Company. It takes the stress and uncertainty out of bus travel, as you know how long it will be before your arrives. If you find you will have a long wait, you can choose an alternative route, or walk, or take a taxi.

The buses are tracked by a GPS system.

This information display is on the concourse inside Brighton railway station.

The GPS system is magnificent and does not just serve the public well.
us B&H drivers are able to keep within a 50 second late window and NEVER be early at our destinations,which is good for everybody - we always turn up late at the worst but we always turn up for our waiting passengers,rather than drive off early for passengers that havent arrived yet cos we are early!

It has its glitches - the systems updates when we open the doors of our buses, and ditchling road has "jumps" where you gain time, this happens in a few spots around the town.

A brilliant invention though.

This is a superb system - not just for the passengers/customers - but a brilliant tool for the drivers -we have the siemens GPS boxes in every bus and are able to plan much further ahead with the GPS,

On time to late is ideal - early is the cardinal sin in bus driving - we cant pick up people not already there.
It also gives brighton and hove buses the ability to route track in advance and attempt to divert away from congestion.And also perhaps have a "word" with drivers in hurry - we dont want speeding. Passenger safety and comfort is the most important thing and should be for any bus driver.

The centre of the GPS operation is run from "x-ray" at conway street in hove.

Importing people to sustain demand

I got involved in a discussion with a Youtuber called “Philosophy all along”. This was in connection with criticism of Trump’s policy of deporting illegal migrants, which he argued would be bad for the economy as it would reduce demand. This implies that there is a need to import people to sustain demand. There is no obvious reason why a population should not be able to consume everything that the same population produces. If it can not, then something else is going on. It is a basic principle that wages are the least that workers will accept to do a job. Wages are a share of the value added by workers through their wages. The remainder is distributed as economic rent, after government has taken its cut in taxes. Monopoly profit is a temporary surplus that after a delay gets absorbed into economic rent. Land values in Silicon Valley are an example of this; it's like a gold rush. Beyond electrification

In an earlier post I suggested a core list of lines which ought to be in an electrification programme spread over twenty years of so. This leaves a residue of routes which it is unlikely will ever be electrified. This include for example All lines beyond Glasgow, Stirling and Aberdeen All lines west of Exeter and Swansea All lines west of Chester Shrewsbury - Chester Everything not listed in my previous blog - electrification plans only scratch surface   Some of these routes carry main line services to London and other cities on parts of the network that are already electrified or included in electrification plans. Others are self contained and others carry light traffic - less than a dozen trains a day. The current plan is that main line services will be operated with the hybrid trains on order from Hitachi, but this is a costly, wasteful and ineffective solution.
